Mali: report 2007

November 2007: A very busy month but one which is full of hope for the future of the children. Our collaboration with the health services is beginning to bear fruit. Sophie goes to Sélingué with the Regional Department of Health (DRS) to help with the finalisation of the national protocol to combat malnutrition. Henceforth she will supervise the four areas where hospital units have been put in place; Gao; Anssongo; Ménaka and Bourem. All the Community Health Centres (CSCOM) will be stocked with flour, oil and sugar, UNICEF will provide therapeutic foods and Action Against Hunger (ACF) will provide training support for a year in close consultation with AAG.

December 2007 : The cold season is upon us and as we are running out of space we will take out the beds and put sleeping mats on the floor in true African style. All the children need is care and attention. During Sophie's visit to Sélingué, two severely malnourished babies have been admitted as well as a 6 or 7 year old girl. She is malnourished and weighs less than 60% of what she should. This is further complicated by heart and lung problems. She is clinging to life with all her strength but it will take time, patience and love to bring her back to full health.

Sophie and the children thank you for your help and wish you a very

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
